So far there have been more than 3, 000 versions of Zhou Yi. Each one was said to reconstruct the so-called original meanings of Zhou Yi. But no one has evidence to prove itself.

Modern investigators have discovered that the original meanings of Zhou Yi hexagram and line statements is radically different from today s Zhou Yi that was edited by Confucius and his students. They concerned largely with the mechanics of divination and suppressed its original meanings in order to replace them with Confucian and pro- Confucian reading. Today s Zhou Yi was given a Confucian slant that shaped all subsequent interpretation and the meaning of individual words even the way the texts are divided into phrases and clauses were radically revised. Thus, since the beginning of Confucianism s monopolization in the academic world, Zhou Yi has been canonized as one of the Confucian classics

Following the Yi Zhuan, Confucian and pro-Confucian commentators, such as Ban Gu, Wang Bi(226-249), Kong Yingda(574-648), Cheng Yi (1033-1107), Zhu Xi (1130-1200) and so on, have used the book of divination and wisdom approach to interpreting Zhou Yi. While emphasizing their belief that Yi was originally a divination book , they attempted to extract some kind of perfect and unchanging meanings, especially the values and ideals of Confucian morality and ethics, from it as a timeless book of wisdom.

Wang Bi s Zhou Yi zhu ( Commentary on Zhou Yi) was the orthodox interpretation during the course of the pre-Tang and Tang Dynasty and was finally canonized in Kong Yingda s Zhou Yi zhengyi ( Correct Meaning of Zhou Yi). Since the Song Dynasty, Cheng Yi s commentary is called the Yichuan Yizhuan and Zhu Xi s is called Zhou Yi Benyi (Original Meaning of Zhou Yi) have become official Neo-Confucian orthodox.

Unlike Confucian and pro-Confucian scholars, Daoists interpreted Zhou Yi by have focusing on its mathematics and symbolism. However, Daoist versions have not eascaped from the influences of the book of divination and wisdom approach. Some version were from the viewpoint of their theories of magic and have been regarded as the exalted divination texts.

All of these versions are the historical products rather than the original meaning of Zhou Yi. More and more advances in archaeology, paleography and textual studies have revealed that prehistoric and historical sages are responsible for the origins of the numbering-hexagram system and the composition of the text of Zhou Yi. We have grasped systematic evidences to prove the truth of the original meaning of Zgou Yi. Based on the systematic evidences, this book will thoroughly discredit the myth of its sagely authorship and original meaning.

Eng

A~SO

€{SO

Your inputs are always welcome!

You are welcome to input your comments, suggestions, supports and donations.

There is a bank account of our society for raising funds.

All proceeds will be used to fund publishing the books mentioned above, developing international cooperation on the theme, promoting Universe Yi research and education.

You can contact us by mail via our mailing address on the left side of the page or email at jvs@shaw.ca.

© 2004 The Canada Society of Yi Jing (The Book of Changes).
